What is briar wood?
Briar - the burls of the Mediterranean Erica Arborea shrubs are globally the first choice for tobacco pipe collectors. These root burls have a porous wood, high temperature resistant, non-uniform, highly appreciated for its unique texture. The interior of these burls is yellowish-red, with relatively many imperfections. Known in the trade as Ebauchon, it is used for making lower quality PIPES.

The exterior, known as Plateau, has a yellowish color, relatively compact rings, greater resistance, and fewer imperfections, but it is harder to find in adequately sized blocks, harder to work, and more durable, therefore being used for the production of high-quality and finely aesthetic pipes. Due to the large number of imperfections in the wood and the lengthy drying process, which result in a quite limited production of pipes, the prices for a pipe made from a plateau are very high.
Pipes made from this wood are found in almost all shapes and sizes, it is worth noting that for financial reasons many of them involve a sandblasted finish, having a rougher surface, more comfortable, without imperfections due to the sand points frequently found in briar. The uneven structure of the wood makes it very absorbent, resulting in dry smoke.
